Soulmate

I am at the completion of the project for Graphic Design at my art college. However, I still need to do a photo-shoot outdoors of the items that play a part in my solution to the project brief.

= PLEASE NOTE, I DO NOT INTEND TO HURT ANYONE'S FEELINGS TOWARDS DYING =

I will be traveling from Edinburgh centre to the Airport.
With me is my little suitcase called 'Soulmate'

Making a 'Soulmate' from place-mats, wool, label, and metal sponges (used as wheels).

The 'Soulmate' is particularly 'light' as the max. allowed weight of the contained soul is 21 grams.

The problem statement is: "People die"
My response to this statement is: "I Love Dying"
The Soulmate is there to make my 'last journey' a fun experience...

It still needs a handle to hold on to it while walking...

J. Daniel Pacey has taken the following highly-artistic-quality pictures, for which I am most grateful, covering the following:

1) Me and my little suitcase on the street

2) Me and my little suitcase in front of the entrance of the bus

4) A view of the Airport entrance: Check-in

5) Me inside the Airport toilet whilst my little suitcase stays in the hall; separation of body and soul.

6) My little soul/suitcase on the stairway (... to heaven)

Note: One only sees my feet (frog-view) besides the suitcase. I will be barefooted in the take, to stress the fact of my body separating from my soul (which is in the little suitcase, as you had guessed already).

The pictures will finally end up in my Last Day photo album, that goes with a slideshow at the presentation next Wednesday to complete the course and for evaluation.

Gurgle

Today we spent time on getting to grips with Digital Imaging, using a software package called Adobe Photoshop. What it (no, we) does is changing the look and feel of images; either photo's, drawings, or paintings.

Before the end of this two week course we have to complete 3 to 6 images that form a sequence, compiled from our own photo's, drawings, or paintings.

To my luck, I had taken loads of pictures of items in mass, or repeating patterns, when I spent time with Angelo Blokzijl in Malaga last year. These images I will use for this project.

Since my piece of work will be about 'repetition' I would like to have them in a range, from left to right, hopefully spanning over a meter in width. Also, I noticed that if one searches for items on the Internet, with the use of search engine Google, the number of pages of hits is visualized by repeating the 'oo' s of Google.

Say I have 16 pages of hits, Google at the bottom of the page changes to Goooooooooooooooogle!

By the way, here is a nice feature to personalize the Google page to YOUR name:

Type any text into the text box below and push the "Make" button.

Enfin, instead of using Google as a name, whilst using their font, I will write Gurgle instead.
Why? Because it is a verb that deals with repetition and it is therefore more suitable for my project.

To gurgle = To flow in a broken irregular current with a bubbling sound: water gurgling from a bottle.

A preview of the Gurgle piece is shown next:

Gurgle, where each 'u' will be replaced by a composition of my Malaga pictures.

For example, I have these pictures taken in Malaga transformed to 'u' shape.

In addition, I played around with repetition patterns of these two pictures:

I Love Dying

Welcome all of you to Edinburgh College of Art - GRAPHIC DESIGN !

To put it bluntly, this is what we have to do:

Project brief - Graphic Design is Great
Over the five days your are with us we want you to create a piece of work that makes a difference for the better. Think about attitudes that need changing or someone who could do with a helping hand. Then think about how you could use graphic design to improve the situation.

The problem I identified as being the most interesting to find a solution for is:

"People Die ..."

The problem with that is that people experience death as a sad event and people are mourning the dead.

I have tried to turn this problem around, stating...

"I Love Dying"

And following are the designs for a photo album of my last day on Earth, celebrating my death that same day.

Cover of the 'Day of Dying' Photo album

First page, facing the problem on a plastic milk bottle while having breakfast.

First page continued, finding a 'hint' to get in contact with for transportation of my soul.

Second page, choosing a 'soul' destination... it is getting exciting now!

Third page, committing to the 'journey' to the After World.

Fourth page, Oh dear I have to pack ...

to be continued (and finished) next week...
